Tania Bruguera’s socially engaged, political projects apply the aesthetics of art to everyday life. Focusing on the transformation of social affect into political effectiveness, they are intensive interventions into the institutional structure of collective memory, education, and politics. In this talk, Bruguera will discuss her summer 2017 YBCA project, Arte Útil, and will explore the concept of "arte útil" a term that, when activated, harnesses the potential of art to shift perspectives and initiate social, political, and cultural change. Biography Tania Bruguera is a politically motivated performance artist, who explores the relationship between art, activism, and social change in works that examine the social effects of political and economic power. She has received a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, and has been awarded various residencies, including Skowhegan, Headlands Centers for the Arts, and ART/OMI. Major exhibitions of her work have appeared at multiple venues, including the Van Abbemuseum, Queens Museum, Venice Biennale, National Museum Wales, and the San Francisco Art Institute.
