Tetra-Tangle of 4 Bow-Tie Links

Tetra-Tangle of 4 Bow-Tie Links, 2014.  ABS plastic,  22 x 22 x 22 cm.

Six tubular snap-together parts of the same color, fabricated on a Fused-Deposition-Modeling machine, form a triangular loop of three “Bow-Ties.”  Four such loops of different colors are mutually interlinked with tetrahedral symmetry.  The result is an alternating 12-crossing link that has the same connectivity as the “Tetra-Tangle,” which I constructed from 4”-diameter card-board tubes in 1983.

Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences | UC Berkeley Design Visual Arts |
Carlo H. Séquin is a professor of Computer Science at UC Berkeley. For the last 3 decades he has connected mathematics and art in his graduate courses on solid modeling, computer-aided design, and rapid prototyping, as well as in freshman seminars on “Symmetry and Topology”. Since 1994 he has collaborated with sculptor Brent Collins to create a few large sculptures such as “Pax Mundi” (at H&R Block Headquarters, Kansas City) or “Music of the Spheres” and “Evolving Trefoil” (at Agenstein Science Center, Missouri Western State University). He is now focused on making mathematical visualization models that are aesthetically appealing even to people who are unaware of the mathematical story underlying them.
