Creative Discovery Grants

The Creative Discovery Grants are on hold. Please check back for updates.

Berkeley Arts + Design received funds to support undergraduate courses within the “creative” dimension of engaged, cross-disciplinary learning. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis to faculty to develop new undergraduate courses or enhance existing ones with innovative creative pedagogy and both online and offline opportunities for reflective making  visual art, design, film, media, the performing arts, and more. Faculty from non-artistic disciplines are also encouraged to apply. Aligned with the core values of Berkeley Discovery, Creative Discovery experiences will ideally require students to face challenges of conceptualization, design, planning, and implementation; build new, and hone existing, creative skills; and participate in structured reflection throughout the act of creation.

Priority will be given to projects that are thoughtfully conceived, that innovate pedagogically, and that suggest scalable models for long-term adoption. While we encourage a wide range of proposals, this Fall, we are particularly interested in proposals that activate the university as a Creative Placemaker and those that innovate in Remote Creative Pedagogy (Note: A+D will fund the use of Artivive in courses that use AR in creative pedagogy.) This second category refers to your proposal’s ability to continue to teach creatively in remote situations and/or to a large number of students, online.

Creative Discovery Fellows Program

Launched in 2018, the UC Berkeley Creative Discovery Fellows Program (formerly Adobe Fellows) began as a collaboration between the American Cultures (AC) Center and the Academic Innovation Studio, with strong support from Digital Learning Services, Educational Technology Services, the Library, and Arts+Design

The Creative Discovery Fellows (CDF) Program helps instructors incorporate creative assignments into UC Berkeley’s undergraduate social justice graduation curriculum - the American Cultures (AC) requirement. No previous experience required!

At the moment, the AC Center does not have funding for faculty to participate in the full cohort-based version of the program, but staff are available to provide consultations and answer questions. Student consultants are also available for in-class demonstrations, one-on-one design consultations, and support for individual students.
