Sebastián Calfuqueo's work is characterized by critical reflexions on the cultural, social, and political contingency of the Mapuche people in relation to the territory today called Chile. Through media such as ceramics, installation, video, and performance, they explore the differences between the Indigenous world and Western culture, highlighting the problems that continue to affect bodies and territories. Their work looks at the construction of history through the archive, taking them to the present to link with sexual dissidences, problems of extractivism and environmental degradation, racism, and other pressing issues. 

El trabajo de Sebastián Calfuqueo, se caracteriza por reflexionar críticamente sobre la contingencia cultural, social y política del pueblo Mapuche en relación al territorio que hoy llamamos Chile. A través de medios como la cerámica, instalación, video y performance explora las diferencias del mundo indigena con la cultura occidental, evidenciando los problemas que siguen afectando los cuerpos y territorios. Su obra mira la construcción de la historia, por medio del archivo, llevándolos al presente para vincularlos con las disidencias sexuales, problemas del extractivismo y depredación ambiental, racismo, entre otros.

Sebastián Calfuqueo lives and works in Santiago, Chile. They have a BA and MA in Visual Arts from the University of Chile, and they are part of the Mapuche collective Rangiñtulewfü  and Yene magazine. Of Mapuche origin, their work draws on their cultural heritage as a starting point to propose a critical reflection on the social, cultural and political status of the Mapuche subject within current Chilean society. Their work has been exhibited in Chile, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and Australia. They are the winner of the Santiago Municipality Award in 2017 and the FAVA Foundation Award in 2018.

Sebastián Calfuqueo vive y trabaja en Santiago de Chile. Es licenciade y magíster en Artes Visuales de la Universidad de Chile, y es parte del colectivo mapuche Rangiñtulewfü y Yene revista.  De origen Mapuche, su obra recurre a su herencia cultural como un punto de partida para proponer una reflexión crítica sobre el estatus social, cultural y político del sujete Mapuche al interior de la sociedad chilena actual. Su obra ha sido exhibida en Chile, Perú, Brasil, México, Estados Unidos, Alemania, España, Reino Unido, Suecia, Suiza y Australia. Es ganadore del Premio de la Municipalidad de Santiago en 2017 y del Premio de la Fundación FAVA en 2018.

Natalia Brizuela is the Class of 1930 Chair of the Center for Latin American Studies, and a professor of Film & Media and Spanish & Portuguese at UC Berkeley with affiliations in the Program in Critical Theory and Gender and Women’s Studies. She is also a Project Director and Co-PI for the Mellon funded International Consortium of Critical Theory Programs.  Brizuela is the author of Fotografia e Imperio; Depois da Fotografia; and The Matter of Photography in the Americas among others. She is Co-Editor of the book series Critical South (Polity).

Natalia Brizuela es cátedra dotada de la clase de 1930 del Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos, y profesora en los departamentos de Cine & Medios y Español & Portugués en UC Berkeley, con afiliaciones en el Programa de Teoría Crítica y Estudios de Género y Mujeres. También es Directora de Proyectos y Co-Principal Investigadora del Consorcio Internacional de Programas de Teoría Crítica financiado por la Fundación Mellon. Brizuela es autora de Fotografía e Imperio; Depois da Fotografia; y La cuestión de la fotografía en las Américas, entre otros. Es co-editora de la serie de libros Critical South (Polity).
