The Second Skin of Great China, 2021.
Great China, a brilliant institution of Berkeley's food scene, is an exquisite homage to the cuisine of Northern China. Part of its appeal, however, comes from the restaurant's renewed dignity after the kitchen fire that destroyed its original location. Seven years after the fire, Katherine Chen examines this dignity, through her formative memories of the restaurant.

Katherine Chen believes that the casual occupancy of 'nativity' in the United States must undergo academic and creative investigation. She spent her last year at Cal finishing her honors thesis on 'new indigeneity' in Steinbeck's literature, and will continue as a visiting scholar under the Judith Lee Stronach Baccalaureate Prize to work on a collaborative, artistic mapping project with Berkeley's unhoused communities.
