Understanding the forces behind naming on UC Berkeley's campus, 2020.

The goal of this project is to engage the UC Berkeley campus community and increase transparency among both students and administration to understand and acknowledge the history behind names of both halls and colleges on campus. Now is the time to raise awareness and bring attention to the histories of the people that we previously respected on our campus and really consider whether these are histories that we want to continue to exalt through naming. Our purpose is to educate and allow the community to participate. This project will allow viewers to better engage with Berkeley’s history and confront the work of those who have made it the university that it is today, without erasing any aspects of the campus’s past. By adding context for the names of both halls and colleges, we can contextualize bias and shed light on changing political and social views. We can recognize our history and the smaller communities within Berkeley while providing a means of communication and connection with current students.

Our team is Wesley Lao, Armaan Tourani, and Sarah Tang and we are three students working on a concept for public art on Berkeley's campus. We worked together on this project for our "Public Art and Belonging" class, where we thought about significant works and events on campus and what it means to increase art in the public spaces of campus to be representative of the student population.
