Vessel Head, 2021.
This piece explores the notion of the ceramic head vessel. The process of making Vessel Head was intuitive and exploratory. Considering our remote learning situation, I worked from my kitchen studio which influenced the materials that I used and the experimental execution of the form. The vessel was sculpted from self-hardening clay and the surface was created using successive layers of Elmer’s Glue, turmeric/chili/curry powders, b&w dried pigment, white clay slip, red dirt, sumi ink, coffee grounds, red wine and spray paint. My hope was that the accumulated layers would activate the surface and diffuse the facial features into poetic ambiguity.

Benjamin Fedosky was born in Fayetteville, AR and works in Oakland, CA. Fedosky’s work in sculpture, drawing, and printmaking explores figurative representation that exists in the liminal space between individuality and anonymity, specificity and ambiguity. Fedosky draws inspiration from Modernist portraiture, naturally occurring sculptural phenomena (such as the plaster figures at Pompeii), and early photography. He is an elected member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors and has exhibited in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
