Bunny Chain, 2021.
Bunny Chain is a chain made from pillows. The pillows themselves have been sewn to interlock. The work itself is flexible and moveable. The pillows can move around each other, but cannot be separated. Each pillow was cut from two pieces of fabric, one side pink silk and the other dyed muslin, and then sewed together. The muslin has been dyed with mashed strawberries and has designs hand-painted with Sumi ink. Two of the pillows have a design that was based on ground beef. The line work of these pillows have overlapping, tightly curving lines. The center pillow has stars drawn on it. This pillow has a less busy design to maintain the visual balance between the pillows. They are stuffed with polyfill. The pillows are cut to resemble a highly stylized bunny head.
Bunny Chain was created as an exploration of the tension between control and tenderness. The pink color palette and bunny shape of the pillows are reminiscent of something soft, sweet, and almost juvenile. Their configuration adds another dimension, creating a chain that hints at allusions to power, bondage, or non-severable ties. The work overall has a very ‘light’ aesthetic while alluding to heavier themes.
