Branches from the Same Tree: The National Academies on the role of humanities and the arts in "STEM/M" learning

Mon Dec 03, 2018 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

View this event and more on our Berkeley Arts + Design YouTube channel.

Featuring Provost Paul Alivisatos, VCR Randy Katz, and VCUE Cathy Koshland in conversation with Tom Rudin and Ashley Bear of NASEM.

This roundtable responds to a seminal report on the necessary role of the arts, design, and the humanities in the future of work and in the future of higher education. Commissioned by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the report argues that a 21st century workplace needs graduates with the capacity for flexible educational models that cultivate critical thinking, empathy, creative problem solving, collaboration, and a tolerance for ambiguity.

Join a bold and imaginative conversation about the future of creativity in higher education (and the future of Discovery at Berkeley) with Paul Alivisatos, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, UC Berkeley; Randy Katz, Vice Chancellor for Research, UC Berkeley; Cathy Koshland, Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education; Tom Rudin, Director of the Board on Higher Education and Workforce (BHEW), and Ashley Bear, Senior Program Officer, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; moderated by Shannon Jackson, Associate Vice Chancellor for Arts + Design.
